“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, then you don’t know what you are doing.” —W. Edwards Deming
The most popular way of making complicated decisions today is to form a team. Usually the team consists of decision makers, stakeholders, and experts. Without a process for guiding the work, most teams muddle through. The process (or lack of process) is frustrating and inefficient, and opportunities for innovation are lost.
This deck of 60 slides describes the Collaborative Design Process for making strategic decisions, particularly when many people are involved. The design of the General Motors C5 Corvette is used to illustrate the process and several powerful strategy tools that go with it. The presentation slides are intended for use by decision consultants and decision coaches to sell projects and train teams.
This process has four clearly identifiable phases: framing, alternative generation, analysis and synthesis. The process enables teams made up of decision makers, stakeholders, and experts to work effectively together and to balance exploration and accomplishment.
Innovation and good design cannot be guaranteed by any process. But as the Corvette case study illustrates, this process has proven its worth in thousands of strategic situations.
This presentation is a companion to the Coach’s Guide to the Decision Analysis Process.
