Transactive Energy is about applying fundamental business concepts to move our electric power markets to a new paradigm. The new paradigm uses forward and spot transactions to manage risk, and to guide investment and operating decisions. Our current business model is command and control. This century old centralized approach is rapidly moving to a decentralized energy ecosystem. The evolution is driven by technology and the need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels. The ideas in this book are spurring innovation.
The transactive energy business model responds to all changes in our electricity system: wind and solar, storage, decentralized energy resources(DER’s), microgrids, and electric vehicles. This book is written for the full range of stakeholders in electric power markets: customers, utility executives, legislators, environmentalists, regulators, economists, energy business professionals, investors and vendors, systems power and electrical engineers, students, and energy researchers.
The authors, Drs. Barrager and Cazalet are both pioneers in the design of new methods for electric system planning. They both studied systems engineering and economics in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University. They have built several pathbreaking companies to serve the electric power industry.
